Two-day Spirit of Peace Conference Focuses on Role of Culture in Sustainable Development
New York, NY, July 18, 2017, history was made when Monarchs from Africa, and Chief Sâchem from Native American Tribal Government came together for the 2nd Annual Spirit of Peace Conference at the Federal Hall National Memorial (26, Wall Street) to celebrate Nelson Mandela International Day with yet another Truth and Reconciliation milestone. The Spirit of Peace is a conference that involves the participation of monarchs, traditional rulers, native chiefs, government representatives, and institutional scholars engaged in candid discussions on historical and contemporary issues. This year’ two-day conference brought together traditional high-level leaders, representatives and delegates of nations to discuss the role of culture in sustainable development, focusing on SDG 16, Peace and security & SDG 17, Global partnership. Topics discussed by leaders and delegates are generally within the context of Indigenous Cultural Sustainability and Cultural Harmony.
This year’s Spirit of Peace event’s features a special program of Truth and Reconciliation which marks the official end of the legendary feud between the house of Dr. W.E.B DuBois co-founders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the House of the honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey founder of The Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA). Both parties, were represented by their descendants and the institutions they helped build. Three actors invoked the spirit of Mandela, DuBois and Garvey in a play titled ‘The Birthday” featuring a chocolate cake in shape of Africa to mark Mandela’s birthday; character dramatization of President Nelson Mandela impersonation act performed by Mr. Joseph Makhandal Champagne Jr., Attorney at law, president of the Haitian Lawyers Association, Former Mayor of the Borough of South Toms River, New Jersey, Dr. W.E.B. DuBois impersonation act performed by Wale Idris Ajibade, executive director of African Views Organization, and Marcus Mosiah Garvey impersonation act performed by Dr. Charles Cornell Jarvis, President of the All Saint Village Funds in Antigua and Barbuda. The play re-enacted the philosophical conflict between DuBois and Garvey and was resolved by Mandela in the play before the grandson of Dr. W.E.B. DuBois, Arthur McFarlane, Population Health Analyst at State of Colorado’s Children's Hospital and the son of Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Julius W. Garvey M.D., FACS, FRCS board certified Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon – took the stage to apologize to one another on behalf of their ancestors and spoke in consensus to seal the peace. His Grace, Archbishop Barrister Benson Mgbuonye Uwha - National Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria and South Africa was there to consecrate the peace.
The Spirit of Peace helps to re-focus our individual mindset on shifting current paradigms: "from dispute to agreement", "from conflict to resolution," "from confrontation to truce," "from hostility to hospitality," "from ailing to healing," from "poverty to sustainability," "from apathy to empathy," "from tears to comfort," and from “negligence to conscientiousness.” This is the true idea of peace. The Spirit of Peace captures the vision of president Nelson Mandela and encourages solidarity with the cause of humanity and fosters good human relations.
The event was organized by the American nonprofit organization African Views in special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) – in partnership with the Mattakeeset Tribal Government Delegate to the UNPFII (United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues).
