Igbo Day New York 2015 – A Night of Culture And Heritage

Queens, New York, USA: On July 4th 2015, the members of Igbo Organization Inc. in New York as well as their friends and well wishers gathered at the Obi Igbo Community Center in Queens New York to celebrate the annual Igbo Day event. Organized particularly for the enrichment of Igbo culture among the younger generation, the event was attended by Igbo youths as well as adults and the elderly and featured Igbo cultural performances.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Guests started arriving at the Community center as the evening drew on and the eventually kicked off with a special session of the Igbo presentation of kolanuts. A number of the invitees were invited to the high table Chaired by Dr & Mrs Ben Okonta with support from other Igbo personalities including the Chairman of the Board of Directors Dr. Marcel Ajah and his wife Attorney/Mrs. Jennifer Ajah. After brief opening remarks, the president of Igbo Organization Chief Obed Ejiogu on behalf of the organization presented some elderly members of the organization with recognition honors before the event proceeded in full swing with various traditional dances and entertainment from the youths and the women of the organization. Among the featured entertainment performances were: The great Ekpe Umuahia, "descended from the spirit world," The Genesis - Igbo children dance group, and the women/mothers dance group. It was a night of entertainment galore well enjoyed by guests and all. The members of the high table then graced the dance floor with the floor-opening dance before the entire guests and all others in attendance joined in dancing to the DJ's exciting beats.
