What does it take to break the cycle of poverty? There are 1.2 billion people worldwide living in extreme poverty, and although this number is declining, Sub-Saharan Africa is the only region in the world where the number of poor individuals has risen. (World Bank, 2013) Karina Weinstein, FXB USA Program Director, will share how the pioneering FXBVillage methodology is breaking the cycle of poverty in countries across Africa and worldwide.

The FXBVillage methodology is a field-tested model that is now available online (https://fxb.org/toolkit/) in an open-source toolkit that was developed with input from experts at Harvard University. For over 25 years, the methodology has delivered extraordinary results in more than 150 FXBVillages and is currently active in seven developing countries. Over three years, the FXBVillage methodology brings the extreme poor to self-sufficiency by simultaneously tackling the five drivers of poverty: food, education, income, health and housing. Independent evaluations have shown that four years after the FXBVillage program’s end, 86 percent of FXBVillage families are able to maintain long-term self-sufficiency, and their children are able to stay in school and succeed.

Previously, Karina Weinstein was a Program Associate at the Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc. and Director at Beck Community Development Foundation. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from Tufts University and a Master in Public Policy from Harvard University, Kennedy School of Government.
