Africa Rising – the Quest for Economic and Social Development and Inclusive Economies

Since independence from colonial rule over fifty years ago, many African nations have struggled to implement development strategies which are reflective of their national priorities and lead to sustainable human development. In the last decade, the international community has witnessed a dramatic shift in Africa’s development narrative, from one of dismal economic growth and endemic poverty to one which characterizes the region as the only remaining bastion of profitable investment opportunity with the potential to yield high rates of return.

While the so called, Africa Rising narrative has created a fresh, optimistic perspective of African development, it is arguably misleading and overly simplistic in its depiction of the state of affairs across the continent as much of the benefits of economic growth have accrued to a small subset of the population. In this seminar, Tiffany Wheatland will critique the Africa Rising narrative and propose that while gains have been made, Africa remains at the precipice of an opportunity for transformative change, yet this change will not be realized through prevailing notions of economic progress.

Prof. Tiffany Wheatland teaches courses on development in Africa at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
