Diaspora Southern Africans to gather for 2014 Reunion in D.C.

Southern Africans to convene in the Washington D.C. metro area Labor Day Weekend for Southern African Reunion 2014 hosted by Southern African Community USA (SACU)

Silver Spring, MD August 18, 2014

Southern African Community USA (SACU) will host its second annual the Southern African Reunion Weekend starting from August 29th through September 1st 2014. The weekend long event consists of several activities that bring Southern Africans together to celebrate Southern African culture and increases awareness of the Southern African community in the Washington D.C. Metropolitan area.

During the Reunion Weekend, which coincide with the three day Labor Day holiday in the USA, SACU will host various activities centered on Southern Africa. Activities planned include the first Southern African Fashion Show which includes fashion designs from across the region. This will be held on Friday, August 29, at the Civic Center in Silver Spring. The Fashion show features AllFlo Coutureny (Lesotho), Sifa Love Designs (Democratic Republic of Congo), Ma Winny (Tanzania), Marlene Couture (South Africa), Mlambo Designs (South Africa). It also includes well known mainstream design lines direct from Southern Africa such as Namibia’s HemLine, Malawi’s Nzika Wear and South Africa’s Sister Bucks. Models include Miss Zambia USA, Anita Ismail and Miss Namibia USA, Tuakondja Veii.

A family Bring and Braai (BBQ) picnic will be held on Saturday, August 30 at Valley Mill Park in Silver Spring, MD from 10am-7pm. This includes a day of full of fun activities for the whole family. Southern African Children’s games have been coordinated to keep children entertained. Sporting activities have been scheduled to entertain the adults. Malawi Football Club will be defending their title as the Southern African Soccer Tournament Champions and a netball tournament will be held for the first time this year. There will be a Reunion Flag Party on Sunday, August 31 from 10:00pm – 4am at Tatoo Bar in Washington D.C. that will include Southern African music by Southern African Disc Jockeys. The weekend will conclude with a Professionals Networking Breakfast on Monday, September 1st (Labor Day) at the Marriott Courtyard Hotel in Silver Spring. This includes a networking workshop, Business Card exchange and a chance for professional networking with Southern Africans. Registration is required for this event.

The weekend aims at uniting Southern Africans and friends of Southern Africa and increasing the visibility of Southern Africans in the area which are a part of SACU’s mission.

The Reunion weekend is organized by Southern African Community USA, a non-profit organization representing Africans from the countries of Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Mauritius, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Sponsors include Cheza Dance and Mahama Shipping Company.
