HOW IT HAPPENED:
Guests comprised of people from all walks of life and background were
gathered as of 9:00PM. A film on Liberia and its past and recent crisis
was shown for a while as people continued to gather and make themselves
comfortable. Shortly after, Yewande made her entrance supported by a
talented band including a trio of back-up singers. Yewande made a brief
speech on the need for the music of social change and the need to
support young woman in Liberia to go to school and also be free from
exploitation. After that, the songster took the stage rendered some
beautiful tunes from her album and song after song, the audience clapped
and cheered the emerging songstress. Yewande has been working with her parents, Maudeline and Gebah Swaray (formerly of Zack and Gebah and legendary Liberian producer) on music releases turned Liberian classics over the past 11 years. On her debut effort, her sound is characterized by a blend of jazz, R&B, reggae, light rock, and even classical tonations over West African rhythms. Her songs tell of her recent journeys overcoming severe hardships in her own life. This brief compilation also draws on memories and hopes for a better future for her people.
