Washington, DC: On June 17, 2004, 1500 people attended a Black Tie Gala Celebration to honor individuals who have defied the odds to make significant contributions in society, not only in America, but worldwide.
The theme and tenor for the evening was focused around Leon Sullivan™s 1997 historic Harare Summit Closing Address titled
"We See No Alps." In this inspiring address, Sullivan focuses our attention on how success can only be achieved by overcoming seemingly insurmountable difficulties. The Summit Dinner was held on Thursday, June 17, 2004 in Washington, DC at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel.
Condoleezza Rice was honored for her courageous leadership and fierce commitment to her ideals and principles. According to Ambassador Andrew Young, Chairman of the event,
Dr. Sullivan called us to show great leadership; this is the ultimate focus of the Awards Dinner on June 17th
"to honor those who defy great odds and disregard obstacles along their path. Condoleezza Rice has defied so many odds to become the most powerful African-American woman in history. We acknowledge her for the contributions she continues to make."
Ambassador Andrew Young is the Chairman of the Leon H. Sullivan Foundation, established to continue the legacy of the late Leon H. Sullivan, human rights activist, author of the Sullivan Principles, and founder of several self-help organizations active in the US, 23 countries in Africa, Peru, the United Kingdom, and Poland. More than 1500 attendees paid tribute to Dr. Rice including The presidents of Ethiopia and Equatorial Guinea, several dignitaries from African countries, government officials, national and international business leaders, and Friends of Africa. Miss Gambia International '04, Miss Kenya International '04 and Miss Tanzania International '04 were also part of the festivities.
The cost to attend the dinner was $250.00 per person.
