DIGNITARIES
AND HONOREES at the event
On Thursday
evening, March 31, 2005, His Excellency, Aminu Bashir Wali, Nigerian Ambassador to the United Nations, was Guest of Honor and Keynote Speaker at the Centennial Dinner Celebration of the Rotary Club of the Bronx, N.Y., at Maestro’s Caterers in the Bronx.. The event, from 6 to 10 pm, called “We’re Raisin’ the Roof!”, was to help raise funds to rebuild the Progressive Primary School near Owerri, Nigeria.
The Bronx Rotary Club has adopted the project, in cooperation with the Rotary Club of Owerri, Nigeria, to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of Rotary in Chicago, Illinois in 1905. Since then, Rotary Clubs have been established in almost every country in the world. The project is in keeping with Rotary’s mission to advance international cooperation and understanding, and to promote health and education.
The school is presently in a dilapidated and hazardous condition, without windows or weatherproof roof. Plans call for reconstructing the school building with six elementary classrooms and a headmaster’s office. Ms. Taylor Eskew, a professional construction manager and member of the Bronx Rotary Club, will head a subcommittee to oversee the reconstuction of the school, in cooperation with the Owerri Club.
