Nigeria's 49th Independence day celebrations and parade in New York city

New York:  Nigerians recently celebrated the country's 49th independence anniversary with a parade attended by many Nigerians and others in the tri-state area and beyond. It was a day of celebration featuring several dignitaries, members of the Diplomatic Corp, New York City council members, leaders, and more. Nigeria gained its independence in 1960 from the then British colonial government. It became a republic in 1963 and has since seen its share of civilian governance, military coups and back again to civilian governance. There were similar celebrations by Nigerians around the world. Our staff was at the parade in new York to bring you exclusive photo-coverage.

The Consul General of Nigeria, Ibrahim Auwalu and Chief Chika Okpala, MON, aka Chief Zebrudaya Okoroigwe Nwogbo, alias 4:30 of New Masquerade during the Independence parade.

TV SERIES: Chief Chika Okpala (Chief Zebrudaya), is involved with a Drama series currently under production and aimed for television audiences around the world (USA, Caribbean, Africa). Contact us for details on the TV Series

Marshals and dignitaries lead the parade

HOW IT HAPPENED: The event started with the arrival of Nigerians and supporters of the Nigerian pride from across the United States especially the tri-state area. Dressed in assorted colors of green white green, the celebrating crowd gathered at the corner of 56th street on 2nd Avenue from where the parade commenced. The jubilant convoy led by parade Marshals such as Nigeria's Consul General, Ibrahim Auwalu; Chief Chika Okpala MON (aka Chief Zebrudaya), Dr. James Obi, US New York City County member; Hon. Eric Stevenson, ULTIMATE COMMANDER, the All African WWW wrestling champion, and more marched to the Nigerian house on 44th street.  Street ceremonies followed at the Dag Hammarksjold Plaza on 47th street, featuring cultural dances, singers, and other artistic performances. There were a number of people who protested for a better governance at home in Nigeria, but not even the downpour during the parade could dampen the joyous mood of the celebrants and the activities continued into the night as several parties were held in the city through the night to cap the celebrations.

We wish Nigeria, a progressive, improving year ahead.
