New York, New York: As part of the celebration of Nigeria's Golden
Jubilee Independence Anniversary, the Nigerian Lawyers Association, USA, recently held
its annual Merit Award Dinner (at the Crown Plaza Hotel) in New York
honoring Professor Wole Soyinka (first African to be awarded the Nobel
Prize in Literature) and Justice Kayode Eso (former Justice of the Supreme
Court of Nigeria). The event was attended by other dignitaries and an
array of other professionals and relatives of the many of the Nigerian
Lawyers Association members including prospective law students. few other
awards were handed out to some other individuals and students. Professor
Wole Soyinka gave the keynote address and this was followed by dinner,
dance and professional networking through the night.

Brooklyn, New York: The Long Island University Conference on -
Africans in New York: Films & Writing on the Immigrant Experience was held
recently. Organized by Professor Yusuf Juwayeyi of the
Sociology/Anthropology Department, LIU, Brooklyn and Professor Jonathan
Haynes of the English Department, LIU, Brooklyn, the event was attended by
a mixture of students and the general population in New York. Among the
panelists and presenters were: Bethels Agomuoh, Oliver Mbamara, Teju Cole,
Felix Nnorom, and Uche Nduka. The event was moderated by Prof. Yusuf M.
Juwayeyi and Prof. Jonathan Haynes. The African feature film THIS AMERICA
was screened and followed by a lively question and answer session.
