Jonathan Mason involvement in sports and humanitarian services date back in the 60s when he was also a star basketball player, according to one of his admirers, William K. Tucker praised him for his effort in promoting sports in Liberia.
Many admire him due to his professional approach to issues, be it administrative or social; he is usually armed with jokes that bring smiles and laughter to anyone who may have had problem prior to meeting the youthful, eloquent and friendly Liberian Minister of Lands, Mines and Energy.
“JAM” as he is affectionately called by many of his peers is usually seen with athletes either at his work place or at home coaching them with his professional techniques in advanced basketball. He has over the years built for himself a reputation that made him to the win the hearts and minds of many.
His academic credentials and other awards are indeed unique, a product of the Wright State University of Dayton, Ohio, the United States of America, where he proudly obtained for himself Masters of Science Degree in Minerals Economic, twenty-nine years ago (1975).
The Liberian Minister of Lands, Mines and Energy is also a product of another US based, Central State University of Wilberforce, where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Geology. Honorable Mason is also a product of the Colorado School of Mines Golden in the United Stares. He has received several awards including the Government of the United States under the North/South Hubert H. Humphrey Scholarship grant in 1985 - 1986.
For his farsightedness and anxious to learn, the honorable Minister of Lands, Mines and Energy in the Liberian Transitional Government during his academic years won for himself while in the United States the Fetsko Memorial Scholarship award in 1978.
Back home in the 1970s, Minister Mason utilized a Liberian Government sponsored Scholarship to pursuit his studies as a geologist. Successes were made in all his studies both back home and away, he received several certificates of honor from other countries including: Oslo, Norway, Nairobi, Upper Volta and a United Nations program in Moscow, the USSR.
For his professional and working experience, the 5’10” tall Geologist Jonathan Armah Mason while in the United States worked at the Trenton Central High School as an instructor for Science and Mathematics including a year (1989 to 1999). He worked at the Arisha consultancy Firm as Geological and Environmental Consultant, from 1994 to 1998.
He worked at the ministry of Land. Mines and Energy as Minister, prior to that he served as Deputy Minister for three years prior to the civil war in his country, Liberia. He served as Assistant Minister for the Department of Minerals Exploration and Research from 1983 to 1984.
He named as role models, late Indian Prime Minister Mahatma Ghandi and the late Ghanaian President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah for exhibiting brilliant leadership skills by inculcating the virtues love and patriotism in the respective nationals.
