The Clinton Global Initiative Inaugural Meeting, New York, 2005

The Clinton Global Initiative is a project of the William J. Clinton Foundation. The mission of the Foundation is to strengthen the capacity of people throughout the world to meet the challenges of global interdependence. To advance this mission, the Foundation launched it’s inaugural meeting in New York City.

THE FOUNDATION and THE EVENT: The William J. Clinton Foundation works principally through partnerships with like-minded individuals, organizations, corporations, and governments to develop new policies and programs in the following areas:
* Economic Empowerment
* Health Security with an emphasis on HIV/AIDS
* Rac ial, Ethnic and Religious Reconciliation
* Education, Leadership Development and Citizen Service

In the course of the 3-day event, President Clinton was able to secure 190 commitments from governments, individuals and corporations to the tune of $1.2Billion. Key among such commitments directly inpacting on the African continent was from the BBC World Service Trust. Along with other partner organizations, it formed The African Media Development Initiative with a goal of increasing free and independent media in Africa over a five-year period.

The event drew notable African leaders such as 2004 Nobel Peace Price Winner Wangari Matai, Nigeria’s Finance Minister, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, President Thabo Mbeki of South Africa & the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan. Other speakers include former Vice President Al Gore, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Queen Rania Al-Abdullah of Jordan & President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria
