FULL REPORT - Tosin Mustapha : Black History Month is a month dedicated to commemoration of the achievements and contributions of African Americans to developments in United States of America. According to historians, Dr Carter Woodson, an educator and Harvard graduate and other African Americans in 1926 used to celebrate the achievements of African Americans for about a week in the month of February but it was later extended into a whole month by 1970. February was selected because it was the month of Federick Douglass`s birthday(a great African American writer, poet and Civil rights leader) and president Abraham Lincoln`s birthday (the American president who abolished slavery). NAACP-National Association for Advancement of Colored People was also founded in the month of February. The achievements of African Americans to developments in America and all over the world are just too many to be mentioned on this page.

Some of the contributors are Dr Martin Luther King Jr who was a great Civil rights leader and Nobel prize winner for peace, Mrs Rosa Park, the mother of civil rifhts movements who paved the way for self-development, Malcolm X (Brother Shabazz) who advocated for social justice so that we can all enjoy the freedom that we are enjoying today and many other Civil rights leaders. In sports, we have Michael Jordan, Mohammed Alli, Tiger Wood and so many others. In entertainment, we have Oprah Winfrey, Denzel Washington, Ossie Davies, Sydney Poitier, and many others. In science, we have Charles Drew who invented the Blood Bank, Augustus Jackson who invented ice-cream around 1832, and Phil Brook who invented the disposable syringe which is now useful in preventing the spread of infection. In music, we have Micheal Jackson, late Baba Olatunji (Drums of Passion), James Brown whom we lost recently, Beyonce, Missy Elliot, Queen Latifa, Steve Wonder and others too numerous to be mentioned.
