A
New Season of Women
In
a male dominated world, women have never had it as good as they did in
2005. The year held significant landmarks for women in world leadership
positions. In January Yulia Timoshenko was nominated new Prime Minister
in Ukraine. In June, Maria do Carmo Silveira was named Prime Minister of
Sao Tome and Principe. September witnessed New Zealand’s Prime
Minister Helen Clark as she took her third consecutive term as the
county’s second woman prime minister; while Angela Merkel, became
Germany's first woman chancellor after managing to piece together a
coalition between her party and the Social Democrats. -

New Season of Women CONTINUED
Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, leader of the Unity party won the most number of
votes in the second round of Liberia's presidential election. A former
finance minister and veteran of Citibank and the United Nations, Johnson-Sirleaf
won a runoff election in November against soccer superstar George Weah, to
head Liberia - Africa's oldest republic that is still reeling from a
brutal 15-year civil war that left 200,000 dead.
A mother of four and grand-mother of six, Sirleaf-Johnson pledged to work
with all Liberians as well as the international community to end the
period of corrupt, male-dominated rule in war-plagued Liberia.
She made this commitment during her first visit to the United States since
winning the elections at a dinner in New York City, organized by the
Business Council for International Understanding (BCIU) in conjunction
with Friends of Liberia.
According to the Peter Tichansky, president/CEO of the BCIU, the purpose
of the event was ‘to bring the new president-elect together with women
in prominent positions in America in order to for her to lay out her
strategy and ask for help in rebuilding Liberia’
Described by the senior VP of AED, Vivian Lowery-Derryck as ‘a
person of competence who won because she ran a strategic campaign’, the
president-elect used the forum to highlight her goals for youth education,
civil service reforms as well as economic reconstruction.
Women leaders in business, government and the media attended the dinner,
which also provided an opportunity for an exchange of ideas and
networking.
The U.S government has pledged to work with the new president and the
people of Liberia to rebuild their institutions and help establish
stability and prosperity. No doubt this is a new season of and for women,
and the world is bound to be a better place if only left in their hands.
The next four years in Liberia will tell.
Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, sworn into office on January 16th 2006, becomes the
first female president elected in Africa.
